You can use timidity++ for use with dosbox. get sound font on debian based distros:

sudo apt-get install fluid-soundfont-gm

load soundfont is doing by:

asfxload -i
 asfxload /home/shorty/sf2/FluidR3_GM.sf2  -V 100%

or cnf file. start timidity and get dosbox device with

mixer /listmidi

dosbox.conf

mpu401=intelligent
 mididevice=alsa
 midiconfig=21:0
